The holding deposit is one week’s rent. On most properties the security deposit is the equivalent of one week’s rent, protected with the Tenancy Deposit Scheme.
How do you get from town to Lancaster University?
By bus or bike, whichever suits your day. Living in town puts shops, cafés and nights out on your doorstep, with campus a short ride away.

Service 1/1A runs direct from the city to the university, and 14 buses an hour serve the campus in total, Monday to Saturday until 7pm. Evening and holiday services run to their own timetables.

Or £555 a year for the Lancaster UniRider from Stagecoach. The university suggests a pass pays for itself if you travel more than three days a week. Bus fares are separate from your rent.

On a signed cycle route or the mainly traffic-free canal path. Campus has over 1,500 free bike spaces. Bike storage is confirmed at our North Road and Queen Street homes, and Gregson Road has a gated garden for bikes.

The university’s estimate for the three-mile walk. On a dry day the canal path makes it a pleasant one.

When should you look for second-year accommodation?
You look for your second-year home while you’re still in first year. A tenancy is a year-long commitment, so the order matters more than the date.3

There’s no need to rush. It pays to know who you want to live with before you sign anything.

Lancaster University Homes holds student housing fairs on campus in both months, so you can meet landlords approved through the scheme.

Your rent includes electricity, gas where supplied, water, high-speed fibre broadband or Wi-Fi and a TV licence. Fair use applies and varies by home.
Free laundry
Every Bayt student home has a washer-dryer with free use, so there are no pay-per-wash charges.
Furnished bedrooms
Every bedroom has a 4ft double bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, bedside cabinet, chest of drawers and shelves.
Local management
Here in Lancaster since 2003. We manage our own homes and respond to reported repairs within 24 hours.

Are Bayt student homes approved by Lancaster University?
Yes. Every Bayt student home is approved through Lancaster University Homes, the scheme Lancaster University owns and runs in partnership with the University of Cumbria and Lancaster City Council. Approved homes are checked for gas and electrical safety and for damp, and deposits must sit in a government-authorised protection scheme.

Our rooms for 2026/27 are £125 to £139 per person per week, with bills included. Our houses are letting for 2027/28, and each listing shows its weekly rent per person once it opens. Rent is paid monthly.
How far is Lancaster University from the city centre?
About three miles. The campus is at Bailrigg, south of the city, and all our homes are in Lancaster itself, so you live in town and travel out to campus.
How do I get to Lancaster University from town?
By bus or bike. Service 1/1A runs from the city to campus every 10 minutes, and 14 buses an hour serve the university in total, Monday to Saturday until 7pm. Cycling takes around 20 minutes from the city centre.
Can I live on campus in second year?
Lancaster University doesn’t guarantee campus accommodation after first year, except for students returning from a placement year. Most Lancaster students live in the city from second year.
When should I start looking for second-year accommodation?
There’s no need to rush in the first term of your first year: know who you want to live with first. Lancaster University Homes holds housing fairs on campus in November and February, and our houses for 2027/28 are open for registrations.
Are bills included?
Yes, in every Bayt student home. Your rent covers gas, electricity, water, high-speed fibre broadband or Wi-Fi and a TV licence, and laundry is free. Fair use applies and varies by home.
Do students pay council tax in Lancaster?
Not if everyone in the household is a full-time student. Full-time means a course lasting at least a year with at least 21 hours of study a week. Our student council tax guide covers the exemption in more detail.

Both. Choose a shared house that fits your group, from three bedrooms up to twenty, or take a room of your own in a shared home. There’s also a single-occupancy studio.
Is there parking?
