Honestly, no — but that answer is useless on its own, because “expensive” is two different questions wearing one coat. The first is what your tenancy fixes: the weekly rent, how many weeks you are contracted for, and which bills sit inside that rent. That half is decided once, in writing, months before you move in, and it is the half most students underthink. The second is what you spend once you are here: food, travel, going out, course kit, getting home. That half is decided a hundred times a term.

Where the money actually goes across a Lancaster term

Travel can be almost nothing here. That is the genuine Lancaster advantage. From the central streets the University of Cumbria’s Bowerham Road campus is roughly an 8 to 15 minute walk for most of our homes, up to about 25 minutes from Meadow Street. The city is compact enough that a night out rarely ends in a taxi across a conurbation, and the free half of Lancaster — Williamson Park, the canal towpath, the Lune paths, the castle hill, the coast a short hop west — is genuinely good rather than a consolation prize.

The point of that is not generosity, it is comparability — the number you compare is the number you pay, and nobody in the house is chasing four people for a gas bill in February.

All of which is why the comparison has to be done in one unit. Convert every option you are looking at to a per-person-per-week figure with utilities and broadband inside it, multiply by the weeks on the agreement, then add travel. A cheaper advertised rent with bills excluded is rarely cheaper once a Lancaster winter is on the meter, and it is never more predictable. Small Lancaster habits that make a real difference

• Live within walking distance and mean it. A daily fare is a fixed weekly cost that never appears in an advertised rent. Walking to campus is the biggest quiet saving available in this city.
• Share bigger. Broadband, standing charges and communal heating barely change with household size, so in a bills-included house those costs split across more people. A room in a larger house usually wins on total weekly cost.
• Cook as a house, not as five individuals. One shop, one oven on, three nights a week. It is the difference between eating well and eating cheaply, and you can have both.
• Use the free half of the city. The park, the towpath, the river, the castle hill and the coast cost nothing and are genuinely worth doing.
• Buy the move-in kit second hand, in June. Lancaster empties out at the end of every tenancy and half a house’s kitchen goes with it. Ask before you order new.
• Claim the Council Tax exemption. A household where everyone is a qualifying full-time student is generally exempt, but it is not always automatic — somebody has to send the proof of studies. Agree early who that is.

And the fourth is the conversation nobody plans — the one with whoever is signing as your guarantor.
