Who Studios Suit Best

A studio suits anyone for whom the housemate lottery is the risk rather than the appeal: postgraduates, finalists, students on placement-heavy or clinical timetables, and international students committing to a year from another country before they have met anyone. It also suits light sleepers, people who cook properly, and anyone whose last house share taught them what they do not want to repeat.

It suits you less if the social side of a house is the reason you are moving out of halls, or if the weekly figure is the binding constraint — a room in one of our shared houses starts at £125 per person per week for a reason. Our studio is on North Road in the city centre, about a minute's walk from the Chapel Street bus stop and roughly 15 minutes on foot to the University of Cumbria's Bowerham Road campus. It is priced by the week and paid monthly, so the year lands as even instalments rather than a winter energy shock. What it does not cover is the rest of student life: food, travel, your mobile contract, contents insurance and course costs all need their own budget line. Council Tax is a separate point in your favour — a household where everyone is a full-time student does not pay it, and a full-time student living alone in a studio is exactly that household. Couples: sharing a studio as two

A studio is the format couples ask about first, so here is the straight answer: the North Road studio is single occupancy — it is let to one tenant, and two people cannot live in it. That is not us being awkward; it is how the tenancy and the building are set up, and we would rather tell you on this page than at the end of a viewing.

The good news is that the better format for two exists anyway. A one-bedroom flat gives a couple a separate bedroom and living room, which suits two routines far better than one open-plan space — one of you can sleep while the other works, and you are not eating dinner three feet from the bed. Studio Viewing Checklist

Compact private spaces need careful checks, because in one room the small details are the whole experience.

• Open the storage and the kitchen cupboards, and work out where a term's shopping actually goes.
• Open the windows and check the ventilation — one room with a hob needs it.
• Ask how heating, broadband and water are billed, and ask for the package in writing.
• Check building entry, the door locks, the lighting and any CCTV.
• Confirm laundry access and where parcels are delivered when you are in a lecture.
• Sit at the desk. If you cannot picture working there for a year, the rest does not matter.
• Ask the tenancy length in weeks and whether any summer retainer applies.
• Planning to live as two? Our studio is single occupancy, so ask about one-bedroom flats instead.

Booking a Studio Before You Arrive in Lancaster

A studio is the format most often booked unseen, because the people it suits — postgraduates, placement students, international arrivals — are frequently somewhere else when they need to decide. That is workable, provided you replace the viewing with something rather than nothing. Ask for a video walkthrough of the actual studio rather than a marketing film, put your questions live on the call, and ask for the answers by email afterwards so you have them in writing.

For an arrival from abroad, an inclusive rent quietly removes a job most people do not see coming: opening UK utility accounts normally needs a UK bank account and a UK credit history, neither of which exists in your first fortnight.
