A student week runs on food shopping, and Lancaster's centre is compact enough that the whole question is "which shop is closest to my front door?" Here is every option, with walking times from the streets our homes are actually on.

From the central student streets, everything is on foot: Aldi on Aldcliffe Road is two to eight minutes from Queen Street, King Street and Penny Street, the Sainsbury's superstore on Cable Street is two to five minutes from North Road, Tesco Express sits on.
Two full supermarkets sit at the edges of the student streets: Aldi on Aldcliffe Road, just across the canal from the bottom of Penny Street, and the Sainsbury's superstore on Cable Street beside the bus station. From most of our homes both are under a fifteen-minute walk.
Tesco Express is on King Street and open six in the morning to midnight daily, a Sainsbury's Local sits on Penny Street, and M&S on Penny Street has a food section. Living centrally means the emergency-milk run is measured in steps.
Lancaster's Charter Market runs in and around Market Square every Wednesday and Saturday — fresh produce at market prices, minutes from every central street. Time the fruit-and-veg shop to it and the supermarket basket gets noticeably smaller.
Home Bargains in the Marketgate centre and B&M on Parliament Street Retail Park cover cleaning products, kitchen kit and cupboard fillers cheaply — worth knowing in freshers week, when a whole house is buying bins and pans at once.
Food shopping is one of the quiet reasons city-centre student living works: the weekly shop, the market and the midnight top-up are all on foot, which is cheaper and easier than any version of the week that needs a bus or a car. We let homes on Queen Street, King Street, Penny Street, North Road and Gregson Road, so the walking times above are the ones our own tenants live with — measured for the 2026/27 cycle, stated as ranges because streets have two ends, and kept honest because a guide that oversells convenience gets found out by October.

The figures are route-measured estimates from the middle of each street — long streets like Penny Street and King Street can run two or three minutes quicker from the near end — and shop hours change, so check before a special trip.

The pattern that works in a five-or-six-person house is a split shop: one walked big shop a week at Aldi or Sainsbury's for the heavy staples, the market on Wednesday or Saturday for fruit and veg, and the on-street Tesco Express or Sainsbury's Local for the between-times. A whole-house staples run split five ways costs each person less than individual baskets ever will, and every leg of it is on foot from our streets.
All the major supermarkets also deliver in Lancaster — worth setting up for the freshers-week arrival shop before the house has worked out whose turn it is to carry things. Check your exact postcode on each supermarket's own site when you book.
South Lancaster students shop a different map: Booths on Hala Road in Scotforth is the full supermarket on that side of the city, a short hop along the A6 bus corridor, and the campus itself carries convenience stores for the top-up shop. It is a perfectly workable pattern — the trade, as ever with south Lancaster, is that the market, the stations and the city-centre options stop being on your doorstep.

From our city-centre streets it is usually Aldi on Aldcliffe Road — two to eight minutes' walk from Queen Street, King Street and Penny Street — or the Sainsbury's superstore on Cable Street, which is two to five minutes from our North Road homes and sits right beside the bus station. Tesco Express on King Street covers the top-up shop from six in the morning to midnight daily.

A split shop across two of those beats any single-store habit.

Not from the central student streets — every shop in this guide is walkable, the big-shop options are under fifteen minutes from most of our homes, and the supermarkets deliver. The campus carries convenience stores for day-to-day top-ups, and Booths on Hala Road in Scotforth is the nearest full supermarket on the south side of the city, on the A6 corridor the campus buses use. Students living centrally shop the city-centre map above instead.
